Course Overview
The Certificate III in Pathology Collection gives graduates the skills and knowledge to work in all areas across pathology collection, for example, private sector, hospitals and doctors’ clinics.

Duration Study Load
Day courses:
- 22 weeks* – 1 day per week (9.00am – 4.30pm) plus 8 additional consolidation classes
or
Evening courses:
- 21 weeks* – 2 evenings per week (5.00pm – 9.00pm) + 3 Saturdays (9.00am – 4.30pm)
- *course dates will be provided to students as part of the application process
Delivery
- In-class on campus, blended learning via a student learning platform and guaranteed practical placement of 35 hours. Arranged by AHT
Entry Requirements
This is an open entry program of study with participants needing to read, write and communicate in English to a level to perform the job.
- Students will be required to complete a “Language, Literacy & Numeracy (LLN)” evaluation to determine suitability for the course
- Students must undertake a “Pre-Training Review” prior to determining suitable for the course
- Students must be over 18 years of age to conduct a practical work placement
- Students are required to be able to access appropriate technology (including a computer). Students must have sufficient digital literacy. Further details will be discussed upon application
- Police checks are required which is included in the student fees and must be completed by week 4 of the course. If a student has a Disclosable Court Outcome registered against their name, we are unable to assist with placement as industry will not accept students without a clear record. This requirement is not negotiable. Please note, in Victoria this includes
- any offence that may have occurred up to 10 years ago
- Students are required to obtain a volunteer Working with Children’s check (WWC) by week 4 of the course
- Students must also be able to provide evidence to AHT no later than by week 4 of the course, immunisation protection against Hepatitis B, COVID-19 (3 doses required) & current flu vaccination
Work Placement
Practical placement of 35 hours is a mandatory requirement of this course. All Health Training will organise on our student’s behalf
Recognition Of Prior Learning
- Competencies gained through other formal study or experience may be acknowledged through a recognition process
Assessment
- As part of the course, students are required to undertake 9 core units of competency and 5 elective units of competency predetermined by All Health Training
- Students are required to complete the written assessments outside of class time, which depending on students underpinning knowledge, may be approximately 6 – 10 hours per week
Career Outcomes
After successful completion of the course, you will be a qualified pathology collector with a nationally recognised qualification.

- Pathology collector (or phlebotomist):
- In a collection centre, hospital, doctors clinics and home visits
- Insurance checks for employment agencies and life insurance companies
- Immigration checks
- Research / clinical trials
- Drug and alcohol testing
- Covid-19 test swabbing
Some roles may require further study.
