Whether you’re a student or work in an office, we could all do with a little time management help. We’ve all procrastinated from time to time, and I’m some of us have made a bad habit of it.
So, without further ado, here are some techniques on how to do time management.

1. Start Early
This is more to do with student life but can be applied to general work as well. Getting it out of the way prevents you from worrying about it later on, plus you get to avoid the stress that comes with doing things at the last minute. Also, when I say ‘start early’, I’m also referring to when you wake up. You’d be surprised how much more of the day you have when you wake up early. You’ll have all the productive time in the world.
2. Break up your work into manageable bite-sized pieces
The main reason why we procrastinate is that we feel overwhelmed by all the work we have to do. That’s why it’s better to do small increments at a time. Set goals that are easily achievable. For example, if you need to write a 2,000 word piece, start by writing 200 words, then take a break. Rinse and repeat.
3. Make up a to do list
The power of planning your day out! It’s surprisingly useful when you organise which tasks you’re going to do at particular times. It gives you a guide and prevents you from meandering and feeling uncertain. There are even apps for this if you’re not a fan of devising your own template, so you have no excuses!
4. Picture what you want to achieve it
Time management is very much tied to motivation, and an effective way to motivate yourself is to think of the big picture and what you’d like to achieve. Are the tasks you’re doing directly contributing to the larger goal? Is what you’re doing necessary?
5. Get rid of any distractors
There are so many time wasters out there, particularly if you’re connected to the internet. If you don’t need wifi for your work, then disconnect yourself right away. If you do, then you should probably use some old-fashioned self-discipline. When you notice yourself moving that mouse to some social media website, pull yourself away. Easier said than done, right? But with practice, you’ll get the hang of it. To experience the benefits of time management, you have to put efficiency first. If this means saying ‘no’ to hanging out with a friend or going out to watch a movie, then do so.
6. Take regular breaks
After a while, your focus is going to wane. There’s no point in forcing yourself to keep going when you’re not thinking. In fact, it can lead to more mistakes in your work. The smart thing to do is to work for twenty- five minutes, then take a ten minute break, then work for another twenty- five minutes.
7. Remember that you’re probably not going to do it later
I know you tell yourself that you’re going to do it later, but let’s be honest here, it’s probably not going to happen. Your future self is not going to more motivated than your present self to implement effective time management, so just get it over and done with. This is also known as the now habit. Just do it!
8. Work/life balance is key
You don’t want to be working all day since that’s obviously not healthy. Give yourself some free time to regain your energy, whether it be meeting up with friends, or taking time out for yourself. Just make sure that it doesn’t interfere with your work schedule, and you should be fine.
9. Prioritise! Prioritise! Prioritise!
Figure out which tasks are the most important, and do them first. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, again, easier said than done. There can be some difficulty figuring which tasks are most important. This is where the 80/20 rule, also known as the Pomodoro technique, comes into play: if you can find the 20 percent of your tasks that will lead to 80 percent of results, then you’re good to go!
10. Don’t feel guilty if you didn’t achieve what you wanted to
Sometimes we’re going to have fluctuations in our performance, and that’s okay! When we do work, the circumstances are always going to be a little different: maybe you didn’t get enough sleep the previous night, or something happened earlier in the day and now you can’t focus. The opposite is true, too; other times you’re going to be on fire and work for hours on end without feeling drained at all. We’re always going to have our good days and our bad ones. What matters is our persistence.
