Free Apprenticeships and TAFE Courses On Offer Under the NSW Budget
In an effort to boost apprenticeship numbers in NSW, the Government has pledged $285 million to help aspiring tradies and apprentices take part in a TAFE course in their chosen field. The massive cash splash into the TAFE and apprenticeships sector comes after the Victoria Government made the decision to provide free TAFE courses in over 50 qualifications.
As one of the NSW State Budget 2018-19 largest promises, over 100,000 people will be able to take part in apprenticeship programs in areas including plumbing, carpentry and building and construction. Apprentices will be able to save over $2,000 in course fees under the plan, in an effort to generate more enrolment numbers across the state in much needed trade areas.
Pledged by the NSW Government to Apprentices
Apprentices and students set to benefit from fee-free courses
Fee-free TAFE courses are not restricted to any particular trade, so students don’t need to worry about missing out. Popular types of apprenticeship courses include areas such as:
Whether you want to be a carpenter, pastry cook or hairdresser if it’s an apprenticeship in NSW, you’ll be eligible for fee free
–Mr Barilaro, Deputy Premier and Skills Minister
In fees scrapped for students
“We’ve heard that even a $2,000 fee seems to be a disincentive, therefore we’re removing the disincentive to encourage more young people into trades” Said My Barilaro, New South Wales Deputy Premier and Skills Minister.
To be eligible for the fee-free courses, students must be taking part in an apprenticeship in NSW, with their off-site course work at a vocational training provider and TAFE NSW. It is also just for new students who have recently enrolled or are about to, or those currently studying and looking to change courses.
Earlier this year, Opposition Leader, Bill Shorten pledged that fees will be scrapped for 100,000 TAFE students under a Federal Labor Government, prompting accusations that the NSW government is stealing yet another Labor promise. However, the fee-free courses are just within New South Wales and to apprenticeships, which differs from the Labor party’s promise of scrapping the fees to students Nationwide.
TAFE Apprenticeships in Australia
Apprenticeships in Australia are a great way to combine on-the-job training with in-class study. Apprenticeships usually take any time between 3-4 years to complete, with graduates having the skills and knowledge needed to enter the workforce.
In New South Wales, the trades are especially important areas for future development. It’s predicted that over 50,000 construction workers and almost 20,000 chefs will be needed across the state in the next year alone.
It’s hoped that the free TAFE courses for apprentices will help boost the numbers of apprenticeship and traineeship commencements across the state.
The release of free TAFE courses in Victoria, and with the New South Wales Government following suit, is a great sign for students in other States, highlighting the strong focus on vocational training in this year’s budget.
The policy is said to come into effect on the 1st of July, this year to 100,000 apprenticeship students.
