Course Overview

The Bachelor of Dance Practice is a specialised degree that will equip you with the skills and experience to become a professional in the dance industry. The course develops artistry, choreography, performance, educational, business, and organisational skills for employment as leaders in the dance industry. It extends into safe dance practice, the values and ethics of community arts practice, dance within a health context, project management, running a small business, and technical production.

As the dance industry continues to evolve, so do the employment opportunities available for graduates. Combining creativity with practical training and industry placements, this degree is perfect for passionate individuals who want to build a solid career within the dynamic dance industry.

The Bachelor of Dance Practice is a pathway course for the Bachelor of Dance Education. The first year of the pathway degree has the same units. If you meet the entry requirements, you do not lose credits or any time when you transfer into the second year.

Delivery

This course is available on campus with selected units available online. It is taught via lectures, tutorials, dance classes, performance workshops, and seminars. Students also undertake three dance industry placements.

Entry Requirements

Applicants for Initial Teacher Education (ITE) courses must meet both the academic entry requirements of the New South Wales Education Standards Authority (NESA) – or their equivalent, AND be able to demonstrate to the satisfaction of ACPE your suitability for entry into an ITE program. You may be granted direct or indirect entry into an Education degree.

Direct entry

To be admitted directly into an ITE course, you must meet one of the following requirements:

  • All applicants must meet minimum computer literacy standards as determined by ACPE and have unrestricted access to the internet and a personal email account.
  • Mac or Windows laptop with the following minimum requirements: 16GB of memory, 256 GB SSD, Intel Core i5 or i7 processor and a front facing webcam/camera.
  • Domestic applicants must be 18 years of age or turn 18 within their first semester of study. International applicants must be 18 years of age or older.
  • All applicants must meet the minimum English language requirements for their chosen course of study.
  • For courses that involve work-integrated learning where you may deal with children (i.e. under 18 years of age), applicants require a valid “Working with Children Check” which needs to be supplied to ACPE before you commence your course.

Indirect entry

If you do not meet the criteria for direct entry, you could be permitted to enrol in a linked undergraduate degree and apply for transfer at the end of the first year of study under the following conditions:

  • You pass all first-year units in the designated ACPE degree with an overall credit average; or
  • if a credit average is not attained, have completed all first-year subjects of the designated ACPE degree and pass the Australian Council of Educational Research (ACER) Literacy and Numeracy test for Initial Teacher Education students (LANTITE); or
  • have a credit average in a full year of academic studies at another institution in a degree with ACPE-equivalent and relevant discipline subjects.

In addition, all applicants for ITE courses must sign a letter acknowledging that AITSL and NESA regulations that require you to demonstrate adequate literacy and numeracy capacities. You will need to complete a LANTITE test by ACER, done at your own cost.

Additional requirement

This course requires all applicants to complete a dance audition (linked to standards of dance technique and dance composition).

Alternate entry

ACPE offers a range of alternative entry pathways to help you enter a degree. If you are looking to turn your passion for dance and education into a career, an industry-recognised qualification from ACPE will give you the foundation you need.

Suitability for teaching

ACPE reserves the right to refuse entry to any applicant based on their inability to demonstrate to our satisfaction, suitability for entry into an ITE program. You must achieve a satisfactory outcome in the Suitability for Teaching Application.

Recognition Of Prior Learning

Recognition of prior learning acknowledges the skills and knowledge that students will bring to their studies at ACPE through previous education or employment experience.

ACPE will assess prior learning to grant credit towards an award, provided the prior learning is current and relevant to the learning outcomes of the award. The assessment for admission and/or credit transfer must be evidence-based, equitable, and academically defensible (TEQSA Threshold Standards).

ACPE may, at its discretion, set additional requirements for the recognition of prior learning, including testing, interviews, and portfolio submission.

Assessment

While some subjects require mid-term and final exams, assessments may also comprise of quizzes, essays, research tasks, practical presentations, and dance performances. If you are enrolled in an online unit, you will need to sit your final exam at the ACPE campus. Or, if you live at a distance, arrangements will be required for external supervision.
