Is a Career in Work Health and Safety Right for You?

What is Work Health and Safety?

Work Health and Safety (WHS) is all about ensuring that workplaces are safe for anyone and everyone who sets foot in there, including staff members, supervisors, managers and members of the general public.

An average day in WHS can involve creating, implementing and monitoring safety plans; training staff on the latest safety procedures and even ensuring that work stations are as ergonomic as possible. Work Health and Safety Officers can also be involved in documenting any incidents that take place as well as helping injured workers return to work once they have fully recovered.

Work Health and Safety in Australia

Australians take their workplace safety very seriously; in fact, Australian businesses must comply with an array of strict Work Health and Safety requirements set out by their local State or Territory government. The WHS profession is tasked with ensuring that these vital laws are being followed to the letter.

Work Health and Safety roles can include working as an occupational health and safety trainer, a hazardous materials expert, or even an industrial hygienist, all of which will typically involve working regular business hours.

While WHS jobs can be found right across the country, the majority are based in Queensland (27.4%), New South Wales (19.2%), and Victoria (17.3%) and the average salary right now sits at around $100,352 per year, making it a highly paid profession.

Work Health and Safety Courses

A career in Work Health and Safety comes with a huge amount of responsibility, which means that you’ll need a high-quality and up-to-date nationally recognised education.

Certificate

A great way to get started is by investing in a certificate level course, as these popular health and safety courses are designed to cover the basics of the industry requirements. Not only will you be up-to-speed on the laws and regulations impacting your industry, but you’ll learn how to monitor safety policies and procedures effectively and even learn how to conduct on-the-job safety training. Best of all, most certificate courses can be completed in less than twelve months and can lead to entry-level roles such as a work health and safety facilitator.

Diploma

If you’d like to build upon your existing skills and step into higher level roles; A Diploma in Work Health and Safety are a fantastic choice. Not only will these extensive courses train you in areas such as safe chemical handling and recognising fire hazards; but it will also allow you to develop your skills in creating and implementing your own WHS policies and procedures. Diplomas will also help to develop the interpersonal skills you’ll need to do your job effectively, such as your leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities.

Bachelor Degree

Those dreaming of specialised roles in WHS should seriously consider a Bachelor of Occupational Health and Safety. This comprehensive course covers the full spectrum of WHS issues, from work environment modifications, wellness programs and data analysis through to the science behind accident investigation protocols. Graduates will emerge ready for roles with higher pay and more responsibility and be eligible for membership of respected industry bodies, such as the Safety Institute of Australia.

With so many choices in courses and delivery methods, whether you’re after an in-class course or online program, getting all the support you need to reach your full potential is easy through our extensive range of quality education providers. Better yet, occupational health and safety courses are designed according to the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF), which means that your credentials will be widely recognised.

Career Prospects in Work Health and Safety
