What Are the Arts

The arts are one of the many cultural-focused disciplines that comprise the study of humanities and encompass dozens of different forms of expression, most which are concerned with creating environments, objects and experiences. The following are just some of the many elements that make up the arts;

  • Literature – poetry, novels, drama, etc.
  • Graphic Arts – drawing, painting, design, etc.

  • Performing Arts – music, dance, theatre, etc.

Arts in Australia

There are 44,000 professional artists currently working throughout Australia and over 109,000 students studying arts at a tertiary level. 38% of Australians participate in the arts six or more times each year; 85% believe that the arts make their lives richer and more meaningful, while 2.4 million international arts tourists visit Australia every year.

The arts also have strong economic benefits for Australian society, with cultural activity contributing roughly $50 billion towards the national economy each year.

Arts Courses

While successful artists are often praised for their natural talent, in order to reach your full potential, the right training is essential. Regardless of where you are at in your personal and professional journey, you are sure to find a course to suit your needs at TAFE, as you’ll find everything from short arts courses in design through to full-length university arts courses in digital media.

Certificate

If you are looking to take up a new hobby or simply boost your existing skills, there are a wide range of Certificate level programs available that can be completed in a matter of months. These include everything from art appreciation and photography courses to studies in digital media, politics and Aboriginal art. Some arts courses at a certificate level can come in the form of visual media, as well as writing and encompass everything you need to hone your fine skills and develop not only your appreciation for the arts, but also develop your technical abilities.

Diploma

Diploma level programs provide a fantastic way to focus in on a speciality area and can be a great stepping stone into professional employment or towards higher level postgraduate studies. Most Diploma courses can be completed in 12-24 months and are available as both in-class and online courses. Diplomas in the arts typically involve working alongside industry professionals, which can include artists themselves, performers and experts to ensure you have the best knowledge, gained from the best sources. Some diplomas are available entirely online, whilst others can be blended and may require a practical element to use your skills and artistic abilities in a studio under professionals.

Bachelor Degree

Those ready to commit to a career in the arts will be well served by a Bachelor level qualification. A Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, for example, not only teaches about social sciences such as history, English, philosophy and culture;  they can also include a high- level comprehensive course in an arts field. A Bachelor of Arts majoring in fine art, visual culture or digital design can provide you with everything needed to become a successful and highly skilled member of the art community, both domestically and on the global stage. In addition to this, a Bachelor of Arts also teaches you the art of research, communication and critical thinking, all of which are highly transferable skills.

At tafecourses.com.au you’ll find a huge range of arts courses advertised, so whether you want to study art courses in Melbourne, drawing classes in Perth or take online art courses in your spare time, your dream program is right here waiting for you.

Career Prospects in the Arts

Art has played a pivotal role in human societies since ancient times and recent advancements in technology have opened even more ways to get creative. For example, the expansion of the digital world has meant that graphic artists are now in huge demand, while 3D printing has made it easier than ever for artists to create and reproduce highly intricate designs.

Artists can now secure financial support for almost any project via crowdfunding platforms and crowdsourcing has become an increasingly popular means of finding additional work. Professional artists also no longer need to tie themselves to large agencies either, with many of Australia’s most successful artists having made their mark by starting their own small businesses.

Is a Career in the Arts Right for You

If you love to create, have the focus and discipline to meet deadlines and aren’t scared to engage in some shameless self-promotion occasionally, a career in the arts could be the perfect fit for you.

You will need to be a master of time management, an effective networker, and have a knack for spotting an opportunity, not to mention possess an endless source of inspiration, and having the ability to motivate yourself is vital. Your reward will be spending your days doing what you love and getting paid to be creative.
