What Do Marketers Do?

Marketers are experts in the art of promoting a business and its brand, which means not only drawing positive attention to their products and services but also creating and nurturing meaningful relationships with their customers.

Modern marketers are responsible for crafting a consistent brand message across a wide variety of channels that can range from radio advertisements, YouTube videos, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram posts. The emergence of content marketing has also meant that fresh, engaging content is constantly required and it’s the marketer’s job to ensure that every message is on brand and related back to what the company wants customers to see it is.

An average day for a marketer can involve meeting with clients, writing website copy and monitoring mentions on social media through to setting campaign goals, creating brand guidelines and studying the competition. Knowing what is and isn’t working is also obviously important, which can involve A/B testing, tracking engagement metrics and analysing the results.

To be a marketer, you need to be able to analyse trends and determine possible niche markets, that is, customers who aren’t currently having their needs met. It’s areas like this which can differentiate a good marketer, from an excellent one.

Marketing in Australia

There are currently just over 80,000 professional marketers working in Australia, with the majority of who have completed some form of specialised training, such as business courses, marketing degree programs and online marketing courses.

Almost all marketing roles involve working regular business hours in an office setting and the average working week is 40.1 hours long. While rates of pay vary widely depending on the position, in Australia, social media specialists make an average of $56,444 per year,  marketing officers earn approximately $88,088, and brand managers take home $76,397 yearly.

Marketing Courses

Getting the skills, knowledge and confidence you need is easy through TAFE provided courses because whether you’re looking for social media courses in Melbourne, digital marketing courses in Sydney or want to study marketing online, we can connect you with all of the best training options for you.

Certificate

Certificate courses, such as the Certificate IV in Marketing, cover everything from the basics of social media to the art of creating customer profiles and even the science behind conducting effective market research. The world of marketing is changing, and so too are the ways it’s being taught. Most marketing courses now focus on areas such as digital marketing and the use of search engines, email and direct marketing methods to communicate better with customers. These popular programs can be completed in 12-18 months and can lead to roles such as market research assistant, marketing coordinator or direct marketing officer.

Diploma

If you want to dive a little deeper into the marketing industry, a diploma in marketing is a wise choice, regardless of whether you’re new to the industry or a marketing professional looking to upgrade your skills. A Diploma of Marketing, for example, will get you up to speed on all the latest marketing tools and techniques while providing a solid foundation in the basics of marketing theory and how best to apply them today. Other areas can include a Diploma of Social Media Marketing, which is more specialised in its marketing content, focusing more on engaging with customers more directly, and across different social media platforms.

Bachelor Degree

To step into marketing positions with higher pay and more responsibility, check out the range of bachelor courses in marketing. For example, a Bachelor of Business (Marketing) will train you in valuable skills including strategic marketing, market research, communications and brand management, and can lead to roles such as digital marketing coordinator and sales manager. Bachelor degrees are highly- regarded by potential employers, and key to obtaining manager positions. The three years it takes to complete are a good investment to make if you want to develop a career that will keep progressing to higher positions.

The Future of Marketing

Few career paths are more future-proof than marketing, especially for those willing to regularly update their skills, expand their knowledge and seek out the latest trends. The hottest trend right now is mobile advertising–which grew by a staggering 50% last year–and it is expected to continue leading the industry for the foreseeable future.

The industry looks set to experience steady growth in coming years with as many as 84,100 advertisers and marketers expected to be working throughout Australia within the next three years. Most marketing jobs will continue to be in major cities, such as Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

Is a Career in Marketing Right for You?

To enjoy a successful career in marketing, you need to be someone who is creative, personable, self-motivated and able to perform under high stress and tight deadlines. You must have clear communication skills, be comfortable working alone as well as part of a team and be someone who doesn’t mind trying something wild and crazy every now and then either.

Think you have the skills to turn unknown businesses into world-famous brands and keep them at the forefront of their industries? If so, you’ve come to the right place, because whether you are interested in studying content marketing in Melbourne, event marketing in Brisbane or taking a digital marketing course online, there’s plenty of marketing courses on offer.

So, what are you waiting for? To get started, simply find your course, fill out an enquiry form and get ready for a fun and exciting career where you get paid to be creative.
