What is an Aged Care Course?
An aged care course is a course that teaches you a range of skills to best equip you to work with the elderly. These courses will prepare you to work in a variety of areas, including:
- Community services
- Ageing support
- Community care services
- As a personal caregiver or personal care assistant
Working in the aged care industry can be incredibly rewarding, whether you’re a personal care worker, in support services for healthcare operations or working in aged care facilities. Aged care can also offer you a wide range of employment options, including full-time work, part-time work, contract work or management opportunities.
Aged care workers see high rates of personal accomplishment from within their work, as delivering home care or being a support worker for the elderly can result in you building meaningful personal relationships with those that you care for.
During a course, you’ll be required to undertake several core units, as well as possibly the option of elective units. These units may include:
- HLTWHS002 Follow safe work practices for direct client care
- CHCCCS011 Meet personal support needs
- CHCCCS023 Support independence and wellbeing
- CHCAGE005 Provide support to people living with dementia
- HLTAAP001 Recognise healthy body systems
- CHCCOM005 Communicate and work in health and community services
- CHCDIV001 Work with diverse people
- CHCAGE001 Facilitate the empowerment of older people
- CHCLEG001 Work legally and ethically
- HLTAID003 Provide first aid
Depending on the level of study you complete, you may also undertake a work placement during your study, along with more detailed units.

- Certificate IV in Ageing Support
- Dual Certificate III in Individual Support and Certificate IV in Ageing Support
