What is health administration?

Health administration refers to overlooking operational units in the relevant settings, such as hospitals, nursing homes, health care systems, health insurance providers, private practices and community health services.

Health administrators aim to establish policies and regulations to ensure that their health facility runs smoothly. These policies serve to improve patient’s experience, including their overall safety.

A health administrator’s general responsibilities include:

  • Managing the budget and the payroll
  • Implementing and adjusting healthcare policy and laws
  • Managing staff relations and human resources
  • Managing patient records
  • Conversing with other healthcare professionals, like doctors, nurses and therapists
  • Reviewing safety, risk and compliance policies

Why should you complete a health administration course?

Many health administration roles require specialised knowledge in health legislation, policy and the medical field in general. For example, medical terminology is a specific communication type used by health professionals to convey information efficiently.

Even for entry-level positions that don’t necessarily require any certification, such as a medical receptionist, completing a short course will look promising on your resume while filling the gaps in your knowledge.

What is the job outlook for health administration professionals?

The health administration industry is on a consistent upward trajectory. In Australia, the number of professionals working in medical administration has grown very strongly, from 2,300 in 2011 to 2,800 in 2016.

Health and welfare services managers also grew, from 22,100 in 2014 to 23,900 in 2019. This number is projected to grow to 28,400 by 2024. In both areas, most work full-time as opposed to part-time/casual positions.

The average salary that a medical administrator/health and welfare services manager earns is $2,148 per week.
