The Australian Cyber Security Centre has reported an astounding 76,000 incidents of cybercrime in 2021-22. This has equated to a total cost of cybercrime in Australia estimated to be over $1 billion per year. Australia is currently experiencing a significant shortage in cybersecurity expertise, paired with a substantial increase in cybersecurity job opportunities. According to Hays Specialist Recruitment, the Australian economy will need to employ an additional 18,000 cybersecurity professionals between now and 2027 to meet the growing demand for cybersecurity roles.

As a result of this high demand, the salary potential for cybersecurity professionals is considerable, with reports indicating that employers are increasing their salary offers for seven out of every ten ICT hires.

They work in a SOC, which is a centralised facility where security analysts can monitor and respond to security incidents in real-time.


          The typical job duties of a SOC analyst include:

          1. Monitoring network traffic and security alerts to identify potential security threats
          2. Investigating security incidents and analysing security logs to determine the root cause of security events
          3. Developing and implementing security policies and procedures
          4. Collaborating with other IT professionals to identify and remediate security vulnerabilities
          5. Responding to security incidents and taking appropriate actions to mitigate threats
          6. Creating reports and communicating with management about security incidents and remediation efforts
