  4. The difference between TAFE and private education providers

Q: What is the difference between TAFE and private education providers?

We are spoiled for choice when it comes to course providers in Australia. But, this vast selection can sometimes leave us a little confused over what provider type is best for our needs and will give us the outcome we desire for our careers.

TAFE and private training providers both offer accredited VET (vocational education and training) courses that meet the standards set by the AQF (Australian Qualifications Framework). However, slight differences between them can make a huge impact.

What is TAFE?

TAFE (or Technical and Further Education) institutes are Australian government-funded RTOs (Registered Training Organisations). They provide accredited VET training courses and short courses in various professions and trades.

Benefits of studying at a TAFE institute:

  • Nationally accredited TAFE qualifications
  • Practical, work-ready focus
  • Low entry requirements
  • Short completion time
  • Lower tuition fees
  • Pathway to higher education studies
  • Often have larger class sizes
  • Often classroom-based delivery

What is a private college?

Private colleges provide higher education courses and qualifications, including bachelor’s degrees, VET qualifications or a combination of both. They’re smaller institutes than traditional universities.

Benefits of studying at a private college:

  • Nationally accredited VET qualifications
  • Higher qualifications may be available
  • Often have smaller classes and communities
  • Pathway to higher education studies
  • Often have more targeted learning and work experience
  • More likely to provide online courses
  • Often employ industry-experienced, high-level trainers

Where should I study?

When deciding between an Australian TAFE or private course provider, the choice will often come down to your desired outcome, combined with cost and how you can fit study into your life.

Luckily, with both types of providers, there are several learning options available to help propel you into your new career or strengthen your skills in your current one.
