The Changing Face Of the Australian Job Market: Victoria

According to the Australian Government’s Department of Employment, Victoria is the second largest employing state, adding more jobs in the previous five years compared to any other state.

The Australian Jobs Report is an annual publication that reflects the changes in the Australian Labour Market; providing some great information around industries, regions and career paths that are booming in Australia.

If you are looking to find out more information about which industries are thriving in Victoria, this article can help you to make the best fitting decision for you and your career.

Type of Workforce

Workforce Qualification

From the data collected, it is shown that the Victorian state employment is concentrated in Melbourne with 76% of all Victorian employment found within the city.

Approximately 69% of workers have a post-school qualification, while the national average is 67%.

Melbourne holds the title for the most highly educated workforce across the state, with 37% of workers holding a bachelor degree or higher.

It was found that Victoria does tend to have an older overall workforce; with 40% of workers aged over 45 years, and 33% working part time.

Workers will see more jobs in the future in these booming regions:


  • Greater Melbourne
  • LaTrobe – Gippsland
  • Bendigo
  • Geelong
  • Ballarat

Largest Employing Industries in VIC

In Victoria, the top five employing industries are:


Health Care & Social Assistance - 13%
Retail Trade - 11%
Professional, Scientific and Technical Services - 9%
Construction - 9%
Manufacturing - 9%

Health Care and Social Assistance is the largest employing industry in Victoria with 413,800. This industry was found to have provided the most new jobs over the five years to November 2017. The increase was by 22.5% (or 76,100).

The Professional, Scientific and Technical Services industry and the Construction industry also saw a spike in new jobs.

However, job losses were recorded for six of the 19 industries where data was collected, with the largest fall in Wholesale Trade (down 13,600).

Circumstances surrounding youth employment in Victoria have improved over the year, with youth employment rising by 1,100 (or 0.2%).

Victoria’s youth unemployment rate has increased to 13.2% in January 2018. However, this percentage is still above the national youth unemployment rate of 12.3%

According to the Australian Jobs Report 2018, the short-term outlook for the Victorian economy is positive. There is an expected 2.0% employment growth in 2018-19, while the unemployment rate is forecast to average 5.75% during this timeframe.
