Higher Level Skills (QLD) Government Funding

Claudia Reiners

What is Higher Level Skills (QLD) Government Funding?

As a Queensland government initiative, the Higher Level Skills program provides Queenslanders with a government subsidy for training.

These subsidies apply to specific qualifications:

  • In priority skill sets
  • At Certificate IV level and above, including Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas.

By supporting you to get a higher qualification, the Higher Level Skills program aims to future-proof your skillset. And in tailoring your skills to priority industries, it sets you up for better employability and career advancement. The program also supports you to use this training as a pathway to studying at university.

The Higher Level Skills program is also open to employers who need to improve skills for existing workers.

How much will I pay for my qualification under the Higher Level Skills (QLD) program?

Subsidy amounts are set by the QLD Department of Employment, Small Business and Training, and vary between qualifications.

Training that the government has deemed higher priority have a larger subsidy. The Priority Skills List shows which qualifications are available, and their subsidy amounts.

Training providers can set varied prices, but the subsidy remains the same – no matter which provider you choose.

Your co-contribution amount will equal the course price minus the subsidy.

Am eligible for Higher Level Skills (QLD) funding training?

You may be eligible to participate in the Higher Level Skills program if:

  • You are an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident, New Zealand citizen, humanitarian entrant, or you are a temporary resident on the way to permanent residency with the necessary visa and work permits
  • You are 15 years of age or older
  • You are a Queensland resident
  • You have left secondary school
  • You hold no qualifications at or above a Certificate IV, apart from those you gained at school or during foundations skills training

If all of the above apply to you, you may be able to enrol in a government-subsidised course.

Do I qualify for concessional student status?

Concessional students get a higher subsidy, which means they pay a lower co-contribution fee. To qualify as a concessional student, at least one of these must apply to you:

  • You hold a Health Care or Pensioner Concession Card
  • Your partner, parent or guardian holds a Health Care or Pensioner Concession Card and your name is on the card
  • You provide the PQS with an official form under Commonwealth law declaring that you, your partner, or someone on which you are a dependent is entitled to concessions under a Health Care or Pensioner Concession Card
  • You are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
  • You are in school and enrolled in a VETiS program (can apply to students in detention)
  • You experience a disability
  • You are an adult prisoner

How do I apply for Higher Level Skills (QLD) funding?

The first step in applying for the Higher Level Skills funding is to check your eligibility.
