Certificate III is a basic entry-level qualification for support roles under supervision. Certificate IV allows you to work more independently with clients, focusing on casework, advocacy and communication. The Diploma prepares you for team leadership, case management, and specialised interventions. Choose based on how far you want to go in responsibility
Certificate III typically takes 6–12 months. Certificate IV takes around 9–12 months. A Diploma of Community Services usually requires 12–18 months, depending on study mode and provider.
Most providers offer flexible online or blended learning options, including part-time study pathways. This is ideal for working learners or those transitioning careers.
Community services courses at the Certificate IV and Diploma level include mandatory work placement, usually between 120–160 hours. Placement is completed with an approved organisation and is a requirement for course completion.
Accredited courses based on the CHC training package are nationally recognised and accepted by employers across all Australian states and territories.
There are no strict academic prerequisites. However, you may be required to complete a Language, Literacy & Numeracy (LLN) test, be over 18, and pass compliance checks such as Working with Children and Police Checks.
A community services qualification can lead to roles such as Community Support Worker, Youth Worker, Case Manager, Aged Care Worker, Disability Support Officer, Mental Health Support Worker, or NDIS Support Coordinator.
Employment in Community and Personal Service roles is projected to increase from 11.1% to 11.4% of total Australian employment by 2033, reflecting strong and growing demand for qualified workers.
A degree is not required for most community services roles. Many support and case-based positions can be accessed with a Certificate IV or Diploma. A degree may be necessary for clinical or social work roles.
Salaries typically start at $55,000–$65,000 for entry-level roles. Experienced professionals can earn $70,000–$85,000+, and team leaders or case managers may exceed $90,000 depending on location and employer.
Many graduates begin with a general Certificate IV or Diploma, then specialise by undertaking further study or enrolling in dual qualifications covering areas such as Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD), Youth Work, or Disability Support.
