Finding a Course

Nutrition courses are in abundance in Australia, ranging from Bachelor and Postgraduate options to free online short courses. But which one is best for you? Which type of course offers you the content you need and want to help you on your journey to becoming a nutrition professional?

Well, this depends on your overall goal of studying nutrition, because the type of course you complete will dictate what exactly you will do as a nutritionist — or whether you’ll even be qualified to be one.

Free Courses

Often, free nutrition courses are:

  • Online courses
  • Short in duration
  • Self-reliant
  • Flexible
  • Able to supply basic nutrition knowledge to its students

For those looking to learn more about the importance of food choice and the effects it has on our bodies and functions, a free course could be for you! Free online nutrition courses often encourage personal interest in the impact of eating habits on human health.

It’s important to recognise, however, that these health courses:

  • Lack proper structure due to 100% online learning
  • Depend on high levels of self discipline
  • Don’t include in-depth knowledge about nutrition science
  • Do not lead to a nationally recognised nutrition qualification

Free courses don’t offer in-depth information, nor the practical work-placement that certified nutrition courses do, that allows for professional development and future career opportunities. But, they do provide primary nutrition education to better achieve a healthier life!

If you’re unsure about pursuing a career in nutrition or financially committing to a certified nutrition course, completing a short, free course may help you grasp a bigger picture of the industry behind the job!

Paid Courses

There are numerous paid course types in the field of nutrition that can lead to a fulfilling career in the nutrition sector of Australia’sAustralia’s health industry. These courses include:

  • Certificates

Certificates in nutrition provide you nationally recognised basic training in all nutrition fundamentals, allowing successful graduates go on into entry-level roles within the industry, including as nutrition and dietetic assistants.

  • Diplomas

Nutrition diplomas are usually a little longer and go into more in-depth detail of all the fundamentals and beyond. Diploma programs require students to complete practical experience, allowing for the opportunity to gain real-life, hands-on experience.

  • Bachelors Degree

A bachelor of health science or nutrition takes 3 years of full time study to complete. Graduates receive in-depth knowledge of all aspects of nutrition and health science, as well as thorough practical placement. Client handling and consultation design is a part of this qualification. Students complete this course as a qualified nutritionist and/or dietitian.

Paid courses such as those mentioned above provide:

  • Structured, in-depth learning
  • Reliable information and training
  • In-depth course content
  • Practical placement
  • Nationally recognised qualifications to allow for workforce entry

Although both free and paid nutrition courses hold their value, it all comes down to your ultimate nutrition goal. For those who wish to brush up on personal knowledge, a free course can assist with this for no cost! However, if you’re looking for more in-depth, certified training to enter the workforce eventually, nothing can beat a paid, nationally recognised course!
