How To Become a Civil Celebrant and The Traits You Need

A career as a civil celebrant is an incredibly gratifying one, as it often revolves around some of the most important moments in a person’s life.
A civil celebrant is an officiant at important events or ceremonies including weddings, funerals and naming days. Playing a part in creating powerful memories for families and friends is rewarding, especially when everything goes perfectly. Â
Various interpersonal and communication skills are required to be a successful civil celebrant. In this guide, we’ll explore what they are, and dive into the role of a civil celebrant so you can confidently take your first steps into the industry.
Industry Overview
Civil celebrants have seen increasing demand over recent years, that reflects a shift of focus from religious ceremonies.
In 2017, 78% of marriages were civil marriage ceremonies performed by civil celebrants as opposed to those conducted by religious marriage celebrants. Notably, celebrancy can be considered a competitive field with many talented professionals working in the industry. However, with a projected increase in the use of civil celebrants for numerous occasions outside of traditional wedding and funeral ceremonies, celebrancy provides plenty of opportunities to work in the industry.Â
Job Outlook
This is an industry predicted to have very strong future growth.
What Skills does a Civil Celebrant Need?
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Confidence in public speaking
- Excellent organisation skills
- Administrative capabilities
- Understanding of relevant laws
- Marketing skills
Working as a civil celebrant demands a range of skills and knowledge. Playing a vital role in what can be considered some of life’s most significant experiences requires strong interpersonal skills. Being able to effectively communicate with the client to tailor the ceremony to their needs and obtain the best result on the day is pivotal in the art of celebrancy. Communication requires the ability to present well on the day, while also having an understanding of their background to ensure you can help make their event memorable.
In addition to the communicational skills involved in working as a civil celebrant, excellent organisational and administrative abilities are also needed for a successful career in celebrancy. Maintaining records for clients is also essential to make the occasion as smooth as possible for them. Often needing to submit legal paperwork that is mandatory as an officiant, civil celebrants need to ensure that they meet the legal requirements. Organisational skills are also relevant when arranging meetings with clients, vendors and managing bookings to maximise their schedule.
In a competitive landscape, civil celebrants also need to have a knowledge of the various marketing tools at their disposal to maintain a busy calendar. These tasks may include basic social media jobs, liaising with other vendors and optimising digital marketing campaigns through platforms such as a website or online directories. Making industry connections is also essential to increasing the number of bookings a civil celebrant will receive.
What Types of Events do Civil Celebrants Do?
Civil celebrants can be involved in an array of different ceremonies. Beyond officiating weddings and funerals, civil celebrants can also be involved in other important events such as:
While typically secular services, civil celebrants can include a religious component if requested by the client.
In the context of a marriage civil celebrant, it is their role to act as an officiant for the Australian Government/Commonwealth (via power granted by the Attorney-General’s Department). It legally validates the marriage ceremony that has taken place by signing the marriage certificate.                    Â
Working as a marriage celebrant offers a broad range of opportunities to help make special moments for people during various important occasions in their lives.
How to Become a Civil Celebrant
The process of becoming a civil celebrant varies depending on what events you are interested in officiating.
For funerals and other non-matrimonial civil ceremonies, no official qualifications are required. However, to be able to officiate a wedding ceremony, a civil marriage celebrant must obtain a Certificate IV in Celebrancy. There are several online and face to face options in getting a Cert IV in Celebrancy to begin your career!
Upon receiving this qualification, a civil celebrant must apply to the Registrar of Marriage Celebrants and pay an annual fee each year to remain an Australian authorised marriage celebrant. Civil Celebrants are also required to undertake professional development and adhere to a Code of Practice, as stated by the Marriage Act 1961 to retain their registration.
A career as a civil celebrant can be an incredibly fulfilling occupation. Playing a significant role in the significant moments in a person’s life is substantially rewarding and can result in an immensely satisfying career path!
