So, what are the three most important qualities of a good counsellor in Brisbane or anywhere else?
- The ability to listen.
- The ability to be empathetic.
- The ability to be non-judgemental.
Of course, there are very many other qualities and characteristics that make counsellors effective, but without any one of the big three, your counselling career is over before it’s begun.
All of the good counselling courses in Brisbane (the ones that are nationally accredited and comply with the requirements of national counselling associations) will provide you with the theory you need to offer your services in any counselling situation you desire. For example, you can get your counselling diploma and set yourself up as a private counsellor who specialises in grief counselling or marriage counselling. Or you could use your coursework in a hospital setting as a grief counsellor, or work for law enforcement as a trauma counsellor.
But, the best counselling qualities are the ones that can’t be taught via an online course or in a classroom at Brisbane’s finest schools and colleges.
Not only do you have to be able to turn off your judgement and compulsion to give advice in a counselling situation, but when the sessions are over you have to be able to turn off the emotions aroused so you can give all your attention to your next client. And then you have to be able to switch it all off at the end of the day so you can carry on with your life.
If you think you can manage all this and retain your sanity then it’s a fair bet that you have what it takes to be a great counsellor.
Counselling courses in Brisbane
Some of the best counselling courses in Brisbane can be found at the Australian College of Applied Psychology, which offers a Diploma of Counselling, Bachelor of Applied Social Science (Counselling), Graduate Diploma of Counselling and Master of Applied Social Science (Counselling) from its branches in Brisbane, Adelaide, Melbourne and Sydney.
The Queensland University of Technology (Brisbane, Australia) has a School of Psychology and Counselling, which includes courses on behavioural science, social work and psychology.
The Australian Institute of Professional Counsellors operates out of Brisbane and several other locations in Australia from where it offers diplomas, bachelor qualifications and graduate certificate courses in counselling.
By and large, a postgraduate qualification in counselling is preferable to a simple bachelor’s degree. That’s not to say that a bachelor’s degree won’t do you any good; it’s just that you’ll be limited in the type of services you can offer – and even the fees that you can charge. Many counsellors opt to complete their undergraduate degree, start work and then study for their master’s degree or doctorate part-time or online. Remember that joining associations will lend credibility to your practice, so ensure that you meet the minimum requirements for membership.
